Durham County Sheriff's investigators say they were investigating what appeared to be a drug deal at a subdivision off Simon Street in Durham just before 11 p.m.
Officials say the chase started after Anthony Massenburg, 32, of Louisburg, jumped into a pickup truck and took off. The stolen pickup got on the Durham Freeway after speeding through stop signs and running other motorists off the road, investigators said.
The pursuit began on southbound Cornwallis Drive in Durham and ended near the Interstate 40/Wade Avenue split in Wake County.
As the chase entered Wake County, the Highway Patrol attempted to deploy stop sticks to halt the pickup truck, but were unable to do so because of traffic.
Officials say Massenburg took the Wade Avenue/I-40 split in excess of 100 miles per hour and swerved across several lanes, hit a street sign, crossed Interstate 440, hit a guardrail and overturned in the woods.
"It ended with the vehicle crashing, the driver exited the vehicle and attempted to flee and was apprehended very shortly thereafter by two of my narcotics officers," said Lt. Dereck O'Mary of the Durham County Sheriff's Office.
Massenburg faces a long list of charges, including a previous felony for breaking and entering in Franklinton.
"If there's such a thing as an ideal chase, this would have been it," O'Mary said.
Massenburg was taken to WakeMed for treatment and was transferred to the Durham County Jail.
A Durham County investgator suffered a sprained ankle during the foot chase.
