Accident Knocks Down Five Utility Poles In Chapel Hill

Officials said a tractor-trailer was delivering items to CVS when it hit a power line around 7 a.m. Tuesday, breaking five utility poles.

One of the poles came down on a new car at University Ford next door, and another was leaning over Ephesus Church Road with high voltage lines on the road. No one was injured in the accident.

Many businesses were forced to close early Tuesday due to the lack of power.

"It's very frustrating. I mean I can deal with a couple of hours, but for a whole day, that makes an impact," business owner Cynthia Williams.

However, some merchants decided to stick it out. Jack Moody and his employees used flashlights to find stock in the back rooms of their business.

"As long as we can stand it in here without air conditioning, we are going to stay here today," he said.

At one point, 1,300 customers were without power. Service was restored Tuesday night.
