Four Charged In May 6 Durham Murder

DURHAM, N.C. — Four men, including two awaiting trial on prior murder charges, were charged Monday with murder in connection with the May 6 shooting death of 22-year-old Reginald Johnson on Weaver Street.

Investigators arrested three of the men -- 23-year-old Mario Fortune, of 1012 Franklin Street, 17-year-old Joshua "Juicy" Johnson, of 301 South Elm Street, and 19-year-old Tyrone Dean, of 200 West Geer Street -- at the Durham County Jail on Monday.

The fourth man -- 20-year-old Deshaun "Smoke" Mitchell, of 3817 Dearborn Drive and 719 Holloway Street -- was not in custody Monday evening.

Fortune, Joshua Johnson and Dean were arrested last week on other charges when Durham police investigators raided a known gang hangout at 719 Holloway Street.

Fortune was charged last week with murder in connection with the Jan. 24 shooting death of 24-year-old Carlos Clayton on Canal Street. Fortune also was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in connection with that incident.

Two other men also have been charged with murdering Clayton.

Joshua Johnson was charged last week with murder in connection with the July 1, 2003, shooting death of 15-year-old Kasheem Greene. Greene was outside a convenience store on Cheek Road near Hardee Street when someone in a minivan opened fire, killing Greene and wounding a woman in the shoulder.

Johnson also was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Dean was arrested last Wednesday and charged with shooting a man on May 10 in the 500 block of Liberty Street.
