HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — An East Chapel Hill High School student has been found competent to stand trial for allegedly holding a teacher and student hostage.
According to arrest warrants, William Barrett Foster, 17, a junior, carried a shotgun onto the campus on April 24 and held civics teacher Lisa Kukla and sophomore Chelsea Slegal hostage in a classroom
He is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 29 on one count of possessing and discharging a firearm on school property, two counts of assault and two counts of second-degree kidnapping.
School officials said they do not know why Foster took the student and teacher hostage and that it appeared to be a random act.
After more than an hour of holding Kukla and Slegal hostage, school officials said Kukla was able to talk him out of shooting them.
Barrett then went home and told his mother what happened, according to school officials. She drove him to UNC Hospitals for psychiatric observation.
