ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. — An Orange County man accused of stabbing an off-duty Hertford County deputy to death made his first court appearance Monday.

Deputy Thomas Lewis, who was in the Triangle visiting friends for the weekend, was on the on-ramp to Interstate 40 at Highway 86 when he got into an argument with 19-year-old Devin Rigsbee. Investigators said Rigsbee stabbed Lewis several times in the back.

Three others -- Phillip Rigsbee, Joshua Abrams and Eric Isley -- were in the car with Rigsbee, police said. They are charged with accessory after the fact. Prosecutors claim all three tried to destroy evidence.

Orange County District Attorney Carl Fox said alcohol was involved, but he would not elaborate.

"It's senseless that this violence occurred at all," he said.

Rigsbee was denied bond Monday. Funeral services for Lewis are scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
