Man In Police Custody Reportedly Died Of Cocaine Overdose

RALEIGH, N.C. — According to a Raleigh police report submitted to the city manager,

a man who died in police custody last week

died from an overdose of crack cocaine.

Police responded to a shoplifting call at the Mission Valley Shopping Center on March 11. When they got there, the suspect, Derek Haithcock, resisted arrest and started struggling with the officer as well as bystanders.

Haithcock passed out, and the officer began CPR.

The Medical Examiner found no broken bones or internal injuries.
