It happened near the intersection of Old Oxford Highway and Dearborn Drive, near the Lakeview School. A bullet went into the woman's car, striking her in the head.
She was expected to be OK. Within an hour, Durham police had arrested two teenagers in connection to the case.
Richard Earl Williams, 17, of Danube Lane, and a 15-year-old unidentified male juvenile were charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.
The victim was getting ready to turn onto Dearborn Drive shortly after noon when several shots were fired. One shot struck the 41-year-old woman in the right side of her head, and other shots struck her vehicle.
The victim drove to Lakeview School on Dearborn Drive and told two off-duty Durham police officers what had happened. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Officers went to the shooting scene and took four juveniles into custody for questioning. Officers also recovered two weapons.
No motive has been determined, and investigators are still trying to determine the specifics of what happened.
Investigators said the victim was an innocent bystander and not the intended target. Investigators are looking into the possibility that the shooting was gang-related.
