Cumberland Teen Talks About Accidental Shooting Of Father

Posted Updated

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities said a teenage girl accidentally fatally shot her father late Monday night.

Officers ruled it an accident, but 15-year-old Dawn Gudeahn cannot believe she killed her father.

"It seems like this is all a dream. It seems like we're going to wake up any minute and everything will be back to normal," she said.

Gudeahn was inside a neighbor's trailer on Bill Drive, south of Fayetteville. She went to sit on the sofa and a shotgun was in her way.

"I went to pick it up and it went off. I ran outside because everyone was screaming," she said.

The blast tore through the wall and hit her father.

"I realized that my dad was shot and I screamed, 'Daddy,' and I was like, 'Oh, my God,'" Gudeahn said.

Friends spent the day by Gudeahn's side. She plans to live with a neighbor for now.

Gudeahn said she does not keep in touch with her mother. She has three brothers who live out of state. She said one plans to see her soon.
