A state trooper was approaching a vehicle he'd stopped for speeding in northwest Raleigh when the driver, Anderson Sheldon Hazelwood, leaned out of the window and said, "Hey, you are going to have to catch me."
Hazelwood eluded a state trooper and a Raleigh police officer at speeds of more than 100 mph before he lost control of the car and crashed into a stand of trees, killing Shavonda Renee Commissiong and her son, Jalien, who were in the car.
Investigators say Hazelwood, who is hospitalized at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, did not have a license and there was marijuana in the car. The Highway Patrol said he will be charged with two counts of counts of involuntary manslaughter. Other charges could be added later.
In all, five people were killed in accidents in the Raleigh area over the weekend.
