WILSON, N.C. — A former high-school teacher who quit his job last month has been charged with taking indecent liberties with a student.

William Earl Hendrickson, 31, of Pinetops was arrestedWednesday.

He had resigned his job at Fike High School on Nov. 6, five days after a reported incident at the school. The details of that incident have not been released.

Fike principal Jimmy Tillman handled the incident when a student told him about it Nov. 1.

At the time, Tillman did not believe any criminal charges could be filed, Wilson County Sheriff Wayne Gay said.

Tillman told school resource officer Jim Howard about the incident Nov. 5.

"I can see where they were hesitant," Gay said. "It was generally agreed upon initially that no crime was involved.".

Hendrickson has also worked in the Nash-Rocky Mount SchoolSystem.

He was to be transferred out of Southern Nash High Schoolat the end of the 2000-01 school year due to a "reduction instaff," said Southern Nash principal Tommy Finch.

Hendrickson resigned there after being hired July 27 at Fike.

Hendrickson was released after posting bond of $2,500.

If convicted, he faces up to a year in prison.
