Durham Police Officer Charged With Assault

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham police officer is on administrative leave, following his arrest.

Officer Michael Aultman was taken into custody Monday morning. He has been charged with first-degree kidnapping, assault inflicting serious injury and assault by pointing a gun Friday. He posted a $25,000 bond, and warrants say he used his house as collateral.

The warrant says Aultman pointed a pistol at Jessie Lee Dixon Jr., struck him on the head and face and forcibly took Dixon somewhere against his will.

Aultman was on duty at the time of the incident, which police say appears to involve a dispute over property.

The department is conducting an internal investigation, and the findings of the probe will be turned over to interim Police Chief Steve Chalmers.

Aultman is on paid administrative leave from his job. He joined the department in August 1999.
