Police: Man Might Have Died Before Standoff

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Police said Monday that a man involved in a five-hour standoff Sunday might have already been dead when they arrived at his home Sunday night.

Officers were dispatched to the 3400 block of Long Ridge Drive at about 4 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report that a man armed with a gun was inside a house threatening to harm himself, police said.

The Durham Police Department's Selective Enforcement Team (SET) was called to the scene after officers attempted to negotiate with the man but received no response, police said.

Police said that SET officers entered the house at about 9:15 p.m. and found the body of 61-year-old Homer Nichols inside. He apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

There was no word on any motive for the incident.
