Police: Driver not at fault in Dunn crash that killed boy on bike

Tyquaves Morris died from head trauma Monday at Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital.

The driver, an 18-year-old girl, wasn't speeding and did stop to help the boy after the crash, police said. She will not be charged in the crash.

Morris' family isn't satisfied.

"It would be nice if the other party would at least try to contact someone in the family to let us know that they are apologetic, that they are sorry," said Morris' cousin, Patricia Davis. "We would like some answers."

Davis called Morris, who loved to sing, her "songbird." The boy also loved to ride his bike, she said.

While visiting his grandmother's house on Sunday, Morris went out to ride his bike. Around 3:30 p.m., Morris came to the intersection of Canary Street and McKay Avenue. He didn't stop at the stop sign and rode directly into Canary Street and into the path of an SUV, police said.

"I was devastated," Davis said.

"He was the most loving boy you would ever want to encounter," said Kenneth Frink, Morris' uncle.

The family said the boy, a second-grader at Anderson Creek Primary School, had won first place in the school art show just days before the crash.

Police said, in any case where young children are killed, it's a tragedy.

"It hasn't happened in a long time and, just like anywhere else, it takes its toll on everybody involved," said Capt. Jimmy Pope.
