Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A five-hour standoff between police and an unidentified man ended Sunday night when the man was found dead, police said.

Officers were dispatched to the

3400 block of Long Ridge Drive

at about 4 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report that a man armed with a gun was inside a house threatening to harm himself, police said.

The Durham Police Department's Selective Enforcement Team (SET) was called to the scene after officers attempted to negotiate with the man but received no response, police said.

The man didn't take any hostages during the standoff and didn't threaten anybody else, police said.

Nearby streets were blocked off during the incident, but no evacuations of nearby residences were ordered.

Witnesses reported hearing a series of several loud bangs at about 8 p.m., and the smell of tear gas was in the air.

Police said that SET officers entered the house at about 9:15 p.m. and found a man's body inside. He apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
