On the tapes, dispatchers are heard sending ambulances to the shooting scene where 22-year-old John A. Lake III lay on the ground in a Bragg Boulevard parking lot earlier this month.
"He is breathing. He's not conscious," a dispatcher says during the call to emergency personnel.
Investigators wouldn't release the original 911 call, but the police tapes confirm that the suspect, Steve Satisky, made the call. He is a Cumberland County ABC Board member and former Fayetteville city councilman.
Once officers arrived at the scene, they took Satisky into custody and confiscated his weapon. Neither Satisky nor his attorney would comment to WRAL on what happened that night, but police radio traffic does indicate there was a fight.
"Yeah, I guess it started off with a disturbance…it was a disturbance that turned into the shooting," an officer is heard to say.
The tapes also suggest that more than one shot was fired.
"An anonymous witness just came by and said he heard three shots," said an officer.
The shooting is under investigation. Lake is hospitalized in critical condition, and police haven't filed any charges.
Satisky hasn't been spotted at his downtown pawnshop or attended recent board meetings at Fayetteville Urban Ministries, where he volunteers. Officials at the ABC Board have declined comment.
