Nortel Expands Municipal Wireless Exports, Puts Research Unit In RTP

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — Nortel

is expanding its efforts to deploy municipal wireless networks around the world, including the establishment of a unit focused on the product and related services at its campus in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

The WiMAX technology efforts will include a research lab at RTP.

Municipal wireless is one of the key strategic areas that will help drive Nortel's business momentum and growth, and we plan to invest heavily in new resources that will help us lead this market."

The RTP lab will be used in part as a showcase for Nortel’s technology.

Municipal wireless networks are being set up in numerous cities across the U.S. and the globe. Nortel efforts include the world’s largest such project, which is being developed in Taipei City, Taiwan. Nortel also is helping to deploy the largest such network in Europe, working with Golden Telecom on a Moscow project.

U.S. projects include Richardson, Texas, and Annapolis, Md.
