WILMINGTON, N.C. — Entrepreneur John McConnell and J. Donald deBethizy, chief executive officer of Targacept, will be the featured speakers at the

Council for Entrepreneurial Development’s Opportunity Conference

.

The event is set for Dec. 4-5 at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside in Wilmington.

McConnell founded Medic Computer Systems, which he sold to Misys in 1997. He later invested in and ran A4 Health Systems, which was sold earlier this year to Allscripts.

DeBethizy helped form Targacept, a biopharmaceutical firm, as a spin-out from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 2000. Targacept went public in April.

"The Opportunity Conference is designed to be informational and inspirational, and these two highly successful entrepreneurs will contribute to both,” said CED President Monica Doss. “Our keynote speakers, as well as the many other experts speaking during the conference, offer a wealth of knowledge and experience in entrepreneurship and business growth.”

The conference, which is in its fourth year, will include a variety of workshops. Also, a number of entrepreneurs will be selected to present business plans to potential angel investors.
