Randle Holmes, 62, shot and injured Derrick Barnes, 19, on Sept. 13 when Barnes allegedly tried to break into Holmes' house in the middle of the night.
Holmes shot Barnes as he was driving away, authorities said.
"The grand jury answered the presentment in the negative, meaning that it does not desire to consider bills of indictment against the homeowner," said Johnston County District Attorney Tom Lock in a news release issued Monday. "Hence, I will not pursue criminal charges of any kind against Randall (sic) Holmes."
Barnes stands charged with attempted first-degree burglary and with conspiracy to commit burglary. His girlfriend, Crystal Morrison, who was with Barnes at the time, is charged with conspiracy to commit burglary.
