Autopsy Rules Out Foul Play In Death Of Missing Cumberland Woman

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A 76-year-old woman who was found dead in a Cumberland County cornfield this fall was not killed.

Autopsy results show Elsie Hales died of natural causes. Investigators said she had medical conditions that contributed to her death.

Hales was missing for more than two months.

In September, a farmer came across her body not far from where she lived.
