Wrightsville Beach votes against smoking ban
Following a public hearing Thursday night, authorities in Wrightsville Beach voted against a ban on smoking on the sand.
Posted — UpdatedThis was the second time city leaders tried to stop smoking on the beach. A vote on the ban lost by one vote in 2010.
Wrightsville Beach Mayor David Cignotti said earlier that he thought smoking ban was just a logical extension of rules that keep the beach family-friendly.
"We regulate many things to make the beach enjoyable for everyone, like you can't have your dog on the beach and alcohol can't be drunk on the beach," Cignotti said.
For Lauren Semple, the scenery and cigarettes go together.
"It's a habit. Come out, smoke a cigarette, have a beer," Semple said.
Smoker Courtney Elders said she doesn't get to the beach too often, but she would be willing to step off the sand to light up.
"I think it would be good. It would make a lot of people unhappy,but personally, I wouldn't care," Elders said.
