Earlier in December, Gov. Mike Easley appointed Cobb to fill the unexpired term of office that ends in January 2005. Cobb had served as interim commissioner since June 2003.
"My life's work has been expanding markets for our state's agricultural products, so we can create good jobs, boost farm incomes, and raise the standard of living for families and communities throughout North Carolina," Cobb said. "I want to continue that work for another term as commissioner."
Cobb, 54, has served in the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for 31 years. From 1979 to 2003, he headed the department's international marketing efforts. He opened the European market to North Carolina sweet potatoes, snack foods, and popcorn.
