GARNER, N.C. — An explosion involving dynamite sent at least three people to the hospital Monday afternoon.

Authorities said the explosion occurred at about 1 p.m. Monday near Wingtip Farm on Auburn-Knightdale Road in Garner.

Authorities said they believe a work crew with Carolina Drilling was laying a sewer line when a worker using a jackhammer hit an explosive that was left over from a construction project last week.

"It was not something -- it was from an original explosion. They don't think it exploded as it should have, originally," Wake County Deputy Fire Marshal Mike Cameron said.

The worker, whose name was not released, was taken to a local hospital. He is expected to be OK, Cameron said. Two other workers were also taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Officers evacuated nearby houses as a precaution in case there were other explosives and shut down Auburn Knightdale Road between Battle Bridge and Rock Quarry roads.

Wake County Fire and Rescue, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were at the site Monday afternoon investigating.
