HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Two teen girls died Saturday morning when their vehicle veered off Buckhorn Road in Orange County and struck a tree, according to the state Highway Patrol.

No other cars were involved.

The driver, 16-year-old Samantha Faith Tilley, of Hillsborough, was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said. Catherine Elizabeth "Beth" Shivers, 19, of Efland, was in the passenger seat.

Both girls were pronounced dead at the scene shortly before noon.

Alcohol was not a factor in the wreck. Buckhorn Road has a dirt surface and Tilley was driving a Toyota Camry about 55 mph in a 45 mph zone, troopers said.

It wasn't clear where they were coming from or where they were heading.

Tilley was a sophomore at Cedar Ridge High School, principal John Wheeler said. Grief counselors will be at the school Monday.

Wheeler said Tilley and Shivers, who graduated from Cedar Ridge in 2011, were very active in the chorus program.

Shivers was a freshman at the University of North Carolina Pembroke.
