Woman Recovering From Brutal Attack As Husband Awaits Charges

RALEIGH, N.C. — A woman who nearly had her hands severed during a brutal assault in which her husband is the suspect was recovering from serious injuries at Duke Medical Center on Monday.

Ebele Hope Achonu was taken to WakeMed following the Sunday attack and then transfered to Duke. She suffered a compressed rear skull fracture and laceration to her left shoulder, and both her hands were partially amputated.

Her condition was not known Monday.

Meanwhile, Achonu's husband, Victor Chukunka Achonu, was being held at the Raleigh jail Monday while awaiting charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Victor Achonu also was taken to WakeMed following Sunday's attack, to be treated for an injury to his neck. He was released and taken straight to jail.

Police say Victor Achonu brutally attacked his wife with a butcher knife Sunday at their home. He was apprehended after trying to flee into woods near the house, but the alleged weapon was not found.
