Reward offered in arson cases at Durham park
Durham police are offering a reward for information on several intentionally set fires at the Piney Wood Park in the past two months.
Posted — UpdatedThe most recent fires happened on Friday night in the dog park area of the park at 400 East Woodcroft Parkway. Police said a stretch of woods about 40 feet by 50 feet was burned in the blaze, just hours after a sign near the entrance to the park was set on fire.
On Dec. 3, a Lincoln Town Car was heavily damaged in an intentionally set fire at the park, police said. On Dec. 25, a 2003 Lexus was destroyed in a fire at the park. Four days later, someone set the park's maintenance storage room on fire in the middle of the night and also painted graffiti on a bathroom wall.
On Jan. 30, workers found evidence of a fire that damaged trees and pine straw in the park. It is not known when that fire was set.
No one has been injured in the fires.
"I think it's a shame. So many people come up here. There's a children's park also. I'm afraid somebody is going to get hurt," said Susan Reynolds, who brings her dogs to the park at least once a day.
Anyone with information about the fires is asked to call police at 919-560-4415, extensions 29311 or 29306 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases and callers never have to identify themselves.
