Man sought in fatal Rocky Mount shooting

Police responding to the American Legion Marshall Pittman Post No. 173, at 401 Madison St., around 2:15 a.m. found Christopher Lorenzo Curtis, 40, outside the business.

He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

George Curtis said Monday that his brother was out with friends and was trying to stop a fight inside the American Legion post when he was shot.

"He was breaking up a fight, and from what we understand, the guy turned around and pointed the gun at him and shot him for no reason," George Curtis said, adding that he doesn't know if his brother knew the gunman.

Chris Curtis was an Army veteran, but American Legion members said he had no connection to their organization.

His family said he was a devoted father of three children, ages 16, 11 and 10.

"He was the one who would always try to bring peace to things. He was a very sensitive person when it came to his family and friends," George Curtis said.

Police are looking for a black man who was wearing a gold denim jacket, pants, a black shirt and brown Timberland boots. He is believed to be 35-40 years old, stands about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs about 175 pounds.

Investigators said he might have been driving a white Honda Accord with a black hood and that another man was in the car with him.

George Curtis said it's been especially tough learning details about the shooting because police are still searching for the gunman.

"My mom, more than anything, just wants closure for my brother," he said. "I myself, I want the animal who did this off the streets because who knows if he's done it before or if he'll do it again."
