FORT BRAGG, N.C. — The top officer at Fort Bragg has upheld the death sentence for a soldier convicted last year of killing two comrades in Kuwait in 2003.
Sgt. Hasan Akbar was found guilty of two counts of premeditated murder and three counts of attempted murder during a court-martial. The charges stemmed from the March 23, 2003, grenade attack on three tents in Camp Pennsylvania, Kuwait.
Capt. Christopher Seifert and Maj. Gregory Stone were killed in the attack, and 14 others from the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky, were wounded.
Lt. Gen. John R. Vines, the commander of the 18th Airborne Corps, affirmed Akbar's death sentence. The case now goes to the Army Court of Criminal Appeals under an automatic appeal.
