Rain Dampens Start Of New I-540 Construction

Posted Updated

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — Rain has forced the delay of the start of construction on a new section of Interstate 540 in Wake County Monday.

The new section of Raleigh's Outer Loop begins east of U.S. 1 (Capital Blvd.), south of Perry Creek Road, and will tie in with U.S. 64 east of Knightdale and the Knightdale Bypass.

During construction, motorists can expect lane closures and detours for Fox Road, Buffaloe Road and Old Milburnie Road.

The intermediate completion of access ramps on existing U.S. 64 to the Knightdale Connector will help establish a new traffic pattern for motorists traveling from Knightdale and points east into Raleigh. Motorists will be able to take the new U.S. 64 Bypass to the Knightdale Connector to existing U.S. 64 by January 2005.

The Department of Transportation said the entire project is anticipated to be complete in spring 2006.
