Roxboro Man Critically Injured In Durham Wreck

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A Roxboro man was critically injured when his van collided with a dump truck Friday afternoon on North Duke Street near Diane Street.

According to the police, the accident occurred around 2:15 p.m. A northbound 1985 Plymouth van driven by 46-year-old Dock L. Ragland Jr. of Roxboro crossed the center line and drifted into the path of a southbound dump truck driven by Reginald Breckenridge Day Jr. of Raleigh.

Day attempted to avoid the accident. But the vehicles collided head-on. Police said Ragland was trapped inside the van for more than 45 minutes before he was extricated by Durham firefighters.

Ragland was taken to Duke University Medical Center, where he was in critical condition early Saturday. Day was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

A portion of North Duke Street was shut down for more than two hours as a result of the accident.

The van was a total loss. The dump truck, which is owned by Earth Performance Inc. of Durham, sustained extensive front end damage.

No charges have been filed. But the accident is still under investigation.
