Flash Flooding Hits West Raleigh

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Several parts of North Carolina are drying out after a round of thunderstorms and heavy rain Tuesday afternoon.

Twenty apartments at Champion Court on Avent Ferry Road were cleared out Tuesday because of flash flooding.

Residents had to rip out soggy carpets from the lower level of the buildings after the water got a foot high.

Waterfalls from Mission Valley Shopping Center and apartments across the street converged into a huge waist-deep pool at Avent Ferry Road and Centennial Parkway.

A North Carolina State student was idling at a stoplight when the flash flood suddenly swept her red Neon away.

A portion of Hillsborough Street was temporarily shut down near N.C. State.

Cars waiting for stoplights were swept away by fast-moving water. Pullen Park turned into a raging river better suited for white-water rafting than paddle boats.

Firefighters were called in to squeegee the flood water that made its way into University Condominiums off Western Blvd. Some residents came home, opened their doors, and the water just poured out.

The storm dropped about three inches of rain in about an hour on the Triangle.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain also rolled through the Piedmont, dropping about four inches on parts of Forsyth County.
