Durham Police Make Arrest In Angier Ave. Homicide

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police investigators have arrested 18-year-old Antonio "Man" Barbee of 804 Angier Avenue and charged him with murder in the July 16 shooting death of 17-year-old David Lamont Cox of Fidelity Drive.

Barbee, who was arrested Friday morning, also was charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

According to police, Cox and a friend were walking home from the Durham County Jail around 2 p.m. July 16 when they took a shortcut through Edgemont Park. As they walked through the park, they saw two men sitting at a table.

The men, who were gang rivals of Cox and his friend, followed them for a short distance. One of the men told Cox he was wearing the wrong color for the neighborhood and then pulled out a gun and shot Cox in the back.

Cox collapsed in the 1000 block of Angier Avenue and was pronounced dead at the scene. Shots were fired at Cox's friend, but he was not injured.

Investigators are still trying to identify the second suspect, who isdescribed as a black male, 18 to 20 years old and six feet tall. He has adark complexion, short hair, a mustache and a small amount of facial hair.

At the time of the shooting, he was wearing a dark blue, short-sleeve shirt with black pants.
