Enloe High student killed in wreck on U.S. 264 in Raleigh
A teen was killed and another injured in a single-vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 264 in Raleigh on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Posted — UpdatedThe wreck happened between New Hope and Hodge roads around 3 p.m. and caused road closures for hours, police said.
Raleigh police said the vehicle was eastbound on U.S. 264 when it made a sudden move to the left, causing it to spin out and strike the guardrail. The SUV then went airborne, overturned and hit a steel overhead sign and the pole that was holding it up.
Enloe High School student Carol Anne Stamper, 15, of Raleigh, a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, Ashley Nicole Szymankiewicz, 17, of Raleigh, was transported to WakeMed with non-life-threatening injuries. Police charged Szymankiewicz with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and with a safe movement violation.
It is unclear what caused the vehicle to swerve, police said, but steady rain left slick roads throughout the Triangle.
