The award will be presented at the PBS Development Conference in Baltimore on Friday.
Jim Goodmon is president and chief executive of Capitol Broadcasting Co., the parent company of WRAL, and Barbara Goodmon is chief executive of the A.J. Fletcher Foundation.
"The Goodmons' efforts on behalf of UNC-TV have played a critical role in assuring that the people of North Carolina continue to enjoy the benefits of enriching, life-changing services that are the bedrock of our mission as public broadcasters," said Tom Howe, UNC-TV director and general manager.
In 1989, Jim Goodmon served as founding chair of the North Carolina Public Television Foundation, which was established to raise funds needed to equip UNC-TV's new studios, and launched a capital campaign for UNC-TV with a $1 million gift through the A. J. Fletcher Foundation. He later was an advocate to convert UNC-TV to digital technology to better serve the people of North Carolina.
Funding from the A.J. Fletcher Foundation has enabled UNC-TV to produce "Biographical Conversations," a series on distinguished North Carolinians that has created a wealth of archival material for historians and future generations.
Other 2006 Leadership Award winners were the E.L. Cord Foundation of Reno, Nev.; Liberty Mutual of Boston; Carmen Carmichael Murphy of Elkhart, Ind.; and the O'Neill Family of Peoria, Ill.
