Halloween In Chapel Hill
At last year's party, there were nearly 50,000 revelers downtown. Chapel Hill police and other departments used 365 officers to monitor activity. This year, town planners want to boost that number to more than 400 officers.
"My inclination is to do everything we can to keep the celebrations safe and not to try and change their essential character," said Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy.
The heightened security comes as a result of recent trouble at the last
Apple Chill festival,
where three people were shot.
Besides the increase in police presence, council members will discuss other new measures at this year's Halloween party, including motorcycle and horseback patrols, portable lights for areas not normally illuminated and safety checkpoints to prevent alcohol and weapons from being brought into the closed area.
