Two Injured In Durham Collision

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham authorities are investigating a Thursday auto accident that left a teenager with serious injuries.

According to investigators, the accident happened around 8:15 a.m. when a westbound 1992 Geo Storm driven by 17-year-old Jessica Phelps crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road.

Phelps' car came back into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with an eastbound 1978 For pickup truck, driven by 21-year-old Jefferson Nunley, that was pulling a landscape truck with lawn mowers on it.

Phelps, who was driving to her summer job, was trapped in her vehicle for more than 30 minutes before rescue crews could get her out. She was taken to Duke University Medical Center for treatment of a dislocated hip, fractured right arm and internal injuries.

Nunley was treated at Duke for facial cuts and then released. A passenger in his truck was not injured.

Traffic was tied up for more than an hour.

No charges have been filed, but the accident remains under investigation.
