More Parking Spaces Up For Debate Among Local Churches

Posted Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Two Chapel Hill churches are debating over the need for more parking spaces and the increased risks more traffic could pose.

St. Thomas More Church wants to build 190 more parking spaces because churchgoers are forced to park along busy U.S. Highway 15-501 each Sunday because of a lack of space.

"I guess the most frustrating part is when you're getting ready to leave and everyone else is trying to get out at the same time," said Matt Cueller, who attends Sunday-morning service at the church.

Aldersgate United Methodist Church next door, however, is opposed to the parking expansion out of concern it will create more traffic.

The expansion calls for traffic to spill out on the same side street the Methodist church uses.

The Chapel Hill Town Council has heard the proposal and a public hearing was held last week, but there has not yet been any resolution to the issue.
