SILER CITY, N.C. — Chatham County commissioners on Monday are expected to discuss a multimillion-dollar incentives package that could bring nearly 150 jobs to Siler City.
The closed meeting would reportedly discuss giving the Maryland-based rock-mining company ISP Minerals $3 million over the next five years for coming to the area.
In July, local leaders unanimously voted on a proposal to bring the mining quarry, which would sit on more than 1,000 acres off of old State Road 421 in Siler City, to the area, saying it would bring much-needed jobs and boost the local economy.
The decision, however, has not been without controversy. Many local residents are fighting the development, citing environmental, noise and public safety concerns.
