DURHAM, N.C. — Durham water employees are flushing the water system in one neighborhood after high bacteria levels were found in a home.

Durham officials said Saturday that one home along West Club Boulevard tested positive for a high level of an unknown bacterium. The city is conducting additional tests on that home to find out the source of the bacteria, and the residents of the house have been asked not to consume the water.

"We have a teenager and an 8-year old," said Shella Gatling, who lives in the house. "So, the concern about having to boil water is a concern. We took water for granted. We no longer take water for granted."

Gatling said her family has been in the house for 17 years with no previous water problems.

The city also took water samples from other nearby homes. So far, no water alerts have been issued for other residences or any other areas serviced by the city's water supply.
