On Saturday, a Wake County program called the Community Emergency Response Team added to its member ranks. As part of the effort, volunteers learn how to become self-sufficient in the event of a disaster. Neighborhood teams are also supposed to be part of the plan.
The program was started with a 2004 grant for $33,000. But earlier this year, no teams had formed and most of the equipment sat in a trailer at a Raleigh Fire Department station.
Volunteers at Saturday's training session said they hope to spread the word.
"I've already told a bunch of my friends about it. I've given them the dates and times for the next training in January. I want as many people to know about this as possible," said volunteer Amanda Garrow.
CERT is still trying to form neighborhood teams. As of February, over 95 volunteers had been trained.
