DURHAM, N.C. — A 12-year-old Durham boy was critically injured when a car struck him early Saturday morning.

Durham police said Brandon Jacob Lewis, of Carolwood Lane, was walking with three friends in the 700 block of Cook Road near Cook Road Park when he was struck by a westbound 1991 Chevrolet Corsica. The impact knocked Lewis into the car's windshield.

Lewis was taken to Duke University Hospital with serious head injuries. The driver was not injured.

Investigators said speed might have played a role in the accident. No charges have been filed in the incident, which remains under investigation.
