Durham Man Pleads Guilty To ASU Student's Slaying

BOONE, N.C. — A Durham man pleaded guilty Wednesday to killing an Appalachian State University student.

Authorities said Marty Thompson shot and killed Joey McClure in October 2004. McClure's body was found on a gravel road in Boone.

Thompson was charged with first-degree murder. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder to avoid a possible life in prison sentence.

A judge sentenced Thompson to a minimum of 18 years and four months in prison.
