Smelly Water Forces Plane To Make Charlotte Landing

Posted Updated

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A strange-smelling liquid forced an AirTran flight from Atlanta to New York's LaGuardia Airport to make an emergency landing at Charlotte-Douglas Airport Tuesday evening.

Authorities evacuated the aircraft and searched the plane after a flight attendant noticed a strong odor coming from a bottle of water that she had found and disposed of during the flight. There were 137 people on board the flight.

The flight was allowed to go on to its destination later in the evening. There's no word on what caused the smell or who brought the liquid on the plane.
