HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — A 7-year-old boy died Tuesday evening after being struck by a sport utility vehicle backing out of a driveway, authorities said.

According to Holly Springs police, the accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. on

the 4900 block of Gable Ridge Drive

in the Sunset Ridge development.

The child was taken to WakeMed, where he was later pronounced dead. His name has not been released pending notification of family members.

The driver of the SUV had traveled to a home on Gable Ridge Drive to pick up his son to take him to football practice, said authorities. Police said the driver's son and the boy who was killed were friends.

Holly Springs Police Chief John Herring said that while the SUV was parked in the driveway, the victim went up to the passenger side of the vehicle to hand something to the driver's son. The victim then moved away from the side of the vehicle, Herring said. It is unknown how the victim ended up behind the vehicle.

No charges have been filed against the driver.

"When you have an incident like this, it's a tragedy for everyone involved," said Herring.

Authorities said they are attempting to confirm which school the victim attended so that they could help staff members prepare for dealing with the death. Herring said that a pastor went to the scene of the accident to speak with fire and rescue personnel who answered the call.

"This is extremely difficult for everybody in public safety to deal with," he said.
