Thousands Temporaily Lose Power After Vehicle Crash

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A traffic accident knocked out power for thousands of Durham residents early Sunday morning.

Durham police said a red 1997 Dodge Durango struck a power pole at the intersection of Broad Street and Englewood Avenue, causing the outage, which spanned several blocks. More than 2,000 customers were without power for about seven hours.

It was not immediately clear whether police had found the driver of the vehicle, but witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing from the vehicle on foot on Englewood Avenue toward Ninth Street.
