I-95 Traffic Nightmare
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — An overturned U-Haul trailer set off a chain-reaction crash Sunday afternoon that forced shut northbound lanes of Interstate 95 for hours.

The accidents happened just before 1:30 p.m. north of Rocky Mount when the U-Haul overturned at mile marker 144.

A tractor-trailer behind the U-Haul had slowed down to avoid a crash when a second tractor-trailer carrying logs slammed into the back of the first tractor-trailer.

The impact of the crash caused logs to scatter across all northbound lanes, closing all lanes. About two hours later, however, crews were able to reopen one lane. The remaining lanes, however, remained closed until about 6 p.m.

Traffic was backed up for miles and had to be diverted.

The driver of the second tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries. No one else was injured.

It was not immediately clear what happened to cause the U-Haul to overturn, and authorities have not said whether charges would be filed.
