South Carolina lottery officials say Powerball sales are down about 15 percent statewide. The retailer that suffered the most is near South of the Border. WRAL was told that Mexico Shop West lost almost all of its lottery business.

North Carolinians who used to be loyal South Carolina lottery players said they've changed their ways. Donald Locklear lives in North Carolina and used to play Powerball in South Carolina until North Carolina's lottery started. Now, he plays Powerball north of the border and scratch-offs in both states.
Retailers knew this was coming and many planned for it. They just hope business picks back up when the novelty of North Carolina's lottery wears off.
Virginia lottery officials have confirmed ticket sales at many of the stores along the state border dropped by as much as 10 percent. They also expected the hit and expect to recover their losses in about two years.
