The Triangle Hope for Middle East Peace Prayer Day will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts. The event, which will be followed by a reception to promote interaction between people of different faiths and cultures, is free and open to the public.
The concept was first discussed between officials with the Raleigh Martin Luther King Committee and the North Carolina Martin Luther King Resource Center. Other groups joining in the effort include The Triangle Interfaith Alliance, The North Carolina Council of Churches, the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh, the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, The Islamic Center of Raleigh, the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, The Raleigh-Cary Jewish Federation, The Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish Federation, Interfaith Food Shuttle, the International Affairs Council, the Raleigh Human Relations Commission, the Muslim American Policy Council, Triangle Bahi'a Center, Triangle Tikkum and the Triangle Lebanese Association.
"We are people of many faiths, coming together in humility and solidarity, to pray for peace in the Middle East," organizers said in a statement. "We are united in our concern for the victims of the current violence, and we mourn the loss of life on all sides."
