Durham Teen Injured In Moped Accident

DURHAM, N.C. — Authorities say a Durham teen suffered serious injuries Friday when the moped he was drivingcollided with a pickup truck.

Authorities say the accident happened at the intersection of James and Ward streetsshortly before 3 p.m.

Sherod M. Rogers, 18, of Nation Avenue, was driving his moped south on James Street when heapparently ran a stop sign and collided with the left rear quarter panel ofa 2002 Dodge pickup truck driven by Gregory F. Byrd, 29, of Efland.

Byrd, who was driving east on Ward Street, told officers he stopped at thestop sign, checked for traffic and then entered the intersection. When Byrdsaw the moped coming at his truck, he accelerated in an attempt to avoid acollision.

The intersection has a four-way stop sign.

Rogers and his 15-year-old male passenger were thrown from the moped. Rogers was taken to Duke University Medical Center for treatment. The 15-year-old was treated at Duke for scrapes and bruises He was later released from the hospital. Byrd was not injured.

No charges have been filed, but the accident remains under investigation. The accident tied up traffic for approximately 1.5 hours.
