Durham Businessman Accused Of Embezzling State, Local Taxes

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham business owner faces charges that accuse him of embezzling more than $120,000 from Durham County and the state.

Thomas Pittard, 48, is in jail following an investigation by the North Carolina Department of Revenue. He is accused of pocketing sales tax he collected as president of Central Carolina Builders Corporation.

Investigators said he stole more than $78,000 in state taxes and more than $43,000 in local sales tax dollars between 2003 and 2006.

Pittard is being held on a $10,000 bond.
