Christopher Kent was arrested last May after Virginia authorities found a small homemade explosive in his car.
The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives searched his storage unit at Public Storage on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh and another storage unit in Virginia, where they found books on bomb-making as well as other paraphernalia.
Kent agreed to a plea deal for possessing an explosive device and possessing obscene material.
Originally from Sherwood, Ore., Kent's family said he was in the military until three years ago. Investigators said they believed he had been living with his girlfriend in Raleigh before they split up. Afterward, Kent had been living out of his car.
